When the Ballarat Wildcats Under 14 Girls team found themselves without a coach last season, it was a grandfather who stepped in to lead.
Neill Jennings, a long-time basketball enthusiast and proud grandfather, didn’t hesitate when his granddaughter’s team was in need. What started as a gesture of support quickly turned into a season to remember - one that ended with the girls taking home to win the season's Grand Final.
But for Neill, the reward wasn’t just in the scoreboard.
“It’s been incredible to watch these girls grow- not just in their basketball skills, but in their confidence, teamwork and friendships,” he says. “Coaching my granddaughter is a bonus, but I would’ve said yes regardless. I’m just grateful to give something back to a sport that’s given so much to our family.”
Basketball has always run deep in the Jennings family. Neill played as a child, passed the love of the game onto his daughter, and now shares it with his granddaughter. It’s a legacy of community, connection, and giving back - values that lie at the heart of the Wildcats.
Neill has since gone on to coach the U14, U16 and U19 Girls teams, helping dozens of players build their confidence, sharpen their skills, and form lasting bonds as teammates.
“You don’t need to be a former player or expert. You just need patience, encouragement, and a belief in the kids. Watching them click as a team is really special.”
